Your breed selection maps to one of five size categories (toy, small, medium, large, giant). Each category has its own published growth curve from veterinary nutrition textbooks.
Puppies hit specific percentages of adult weight at specific ages. We divide your pup’s current weight by the expected % for their age to project where they’ll land.
For known breeds, we also factor in the breed’s typical adult range as a sanity check. The result is a range β not a single number β because real puppies vary.
Most cats land between 8 and 12 pounds as adults, regardless of breed, and are usually full-grown by 12 months. The variability is small, so a calculator doesn’t add much.
The big exceptions are a few larger breeds: Maine Coons (12β20 lb, grow until 4 years), Ragdolls (10β20 lb), Norwegian Forest Cats (12β18 lb), and Savannahs (15β25 lb).
