Most of the panicked calls I get after hours are not emergencies. They are urgent problems that could wait until morning, but the owner does not know that. So they drive to an ER, pay $200 to $400 just to walk in, and spend six hours in a waiting room next to a dog who was hit by a car.
You should not have to guess. Here is the framework I give clients.
True ER, go now
Do not wait for morning. These are the calls that keep me up:
- Not breathing normally, gums pale or blue, collapsed
- Bleeding that will not stop
- Hit by a car, fell from height, attacked by another animal
- Bloated abdomen, unproductive retching (bloat kills in hours)
- Seizures lasting over 5 minutes or clusters of seizures
- Suspected toxin ingestion (chocolate, grapes, xylitol, rat bait, human medications)
- Unable to urinate, especially in male cats (this is a true emergency in cats)
- Snakebite
- Severe trauma or obvious fractures

Urgent care, next business day is fine
These need a vet, but not at 2 AM. Wait until morning and see your regular vet or an urgent care clinic:
- Vomiting or diarrhea, one or two episodes, dog otherwise alert
- Not eating for less than 24 hours (if it is a cat, call sooner)
- Limping, not weight-bearing, breathing normally
- Ear infections, mild skin infections
- Itchy hot spots
- Small cuts that do not bleed heavily
- One eye squinting or discharging
- Broken toenail bleeding that stopped on its own

When you cannot tell
Call. Every vet clinic has emergency triage guidance. If we are open, we will talk you through it. If we are not, ACCESS Culver City has a 24-hour triage nurse.
